New MPS Customer Panel meetings

During the first MPS Customer Panel on July 5 of this year, the developments around MPS-ABC were central. Jan Kamphof (Interim Manager of MPS Management & Development) outlined MPS’ vision of this programme for the near future.  Input from the MPS Customer Panel has been used to further develop MPS-ABC as MPS wants to continue to meet the needs of customers and the market. That is why new panel meetings will be scheduled to test new developments. In addition, we will be organising online meetings for the foreign members of the MPS Customer Panel.

If you would like to participate in the discussion and help take decisions about the new MPS-ABC, sign up for the MPS Customer Panel now and join us at one of the following events:

Annual evaluation of MPS-ABC standards

MPS-ABC participants register various environmental aspects of their consumption, including crop protection, fertilisers, energy and waste. This lets growers show the market, authorities and society as a whole how sustainable their production methods truly are. In addition, registration can help provide valuable information.

The standards used in the MPS-ABC system are determined on the basis of the consumption of all participating companies. Every year, various analyses are conducted to determine whether the standards are still accurate, after which they are modified, if necessary. These modifications sometimes involve making the standards more strict, but in other cases, the standards can become more lenient. This can differ for each registered element. MPS specifies these standards in consultation with the MPS Board of Stakeholders, which is made up of various sector representatives.

Generally speaking, the standards are adjusted at the start of period 11 (this year: 8 October - 4 November 2018). All participating companies will receive an e-mail informing about the technical details before the start of period 11.

The main reason for adjusting the standards every year is to ensure that MPS-ABC remains a challenging programme characterised by a good relation between MPS-A, B and C. That is why we evaluate our standards regularly, aiming for a maximum of 80% MPS-A.

The full impact of the modified standards will become apparent after a year, which translates to after period 10 in 2019. It goes without saying that the impact will start becoming visible in the first qualifications of 2019. We therefore recommend keeping a close eye on the first qualifications of 2019, so that you can anticipate on any changes made to the standards if necessary.

Are you all ready for the uniform MPS vignette?

The uniform MPS vignette was introduced on 23 August 2017. This vignette replaced a multitude of MPS vignettes and logos that had been used in the flowers & ornamentals sector up to that time. Together with the interactive platform www.followyourflowerorplant.nl/en, the uniform MPS vignette contributes to uniform working methods and product labelling for products by MPS-certified companies, as well as offering transparency to consumers.

You can continue to use the old vignettes until the end of this year. Starting from 1 January 2019, the old vignettes of the certificates in question may no longer be used on materials such as packaging, plant markers, etc.

Company in focus: Valto

MPS-ECAS is a certification body that carries out independent audits. MPS-ECAS provides product, system and inspection certifications in the Netherlands and abroad. Valto is one of the innovative companies that MPS-ECAS has been providing with ISO certificates for years.

Since 2005, Valto has been working on developing a solution for the PEPMV virus (Pepino mosaic virus), the most contagious virus to affect tomato plants, which has proven to be very difficult to combat. Over the past decade, it has conducted myriad tests and treated many hectares with its ‘flu shot for tomatoes’, the V10 treatment. “A positive side effect that has emerged after many years of studying the effects of V10, is that plants that are treated with V10 under the right conditions produce more at an earlier stage of the process”, says Thorben Looije, owner of Valto.

In June, the Dutch Board for the Authorisation of Plant Protection Products and Biocides (Ctgp) gave its definite stamp of approval to the product, which is now attracting interest from all over the world. "We have now also started testing our organic approach on other crops. We are currently running pilots with cucumbers, attempting to tackle the Cucumber Mosaic Virus in much the same way. In the future, we strive to solve many more problems faced by growers worldwide in the same, sustainable way.”, says Looije.
